2001 UPDATES
February - April - June - August - November - December

FEBRUARY 2001
Hi Everyone:
While shooting Bill Mumy's photographs for his latest CD I handed him my camera and he took this picture of me. So here I am in the year 2001.
The beginning of this year has taken off like wildfire. I'm working on a documentary project with Heather Menzies Urich right now that we conceived the idea for on our recent trip to Austria.
Hope you've had the chance to take a look at some of the pictures of us shooting the documentary in Salzburg. They are posted under the link SOM Kids and the November 2000 UPDATE. The documentary is called "The Sound of Music Children" and is set to air in Great Britain on Good Friday, April 13th.

Our cast and crew from the documentary we made for British television:
The Children of The Sound of Music
(top row - left to right:) Pete, Andy, Giles (crew), Sothern (our director) (middle row:) Matt, Nicholas, Charmy, Heather, Judith (our Producer), Duane, Kym, me Angela, Debbie (bottom row) Hubert, Mark, Olivia, Stephanie (crew)
It was such an incredible trip to Salzburg, Austria  and it stirred up a lot of emotions from such a memorable experience. What was so strange was to be in the exact locations, with the same exact people 35 years later. It was very thought provoking to say the least.

I have also posted some of my photographs I took in beautiful Austria on the www.RubberBoots.com website. Hope you'll check those out too.
Bill and I are still waiting word on our novel... Patience is the name of the game here. And as I mentioned above, Bill has a new album ready for release "After Dreams Come True" and once again he's asked me if I would shoot the pictures for the CD cover and booklet. I always enjoy doing that and the whole thing should be ready in May 2001.
The entire cast of "Lost In Space" gathers at 20th Century Fox Studios for an important reason ...Lunch! We'll be getting together again really soon when we make our way to Orlando, Florida, March 1-4 for the Mega Con Convention there. Hope you'll come by and see us.

One thing for sure is that life is unpredictable, and you just have to keep taking one step in front of the other. Taking time to smell the flowers...and hugging the people you love...
Until next time...

UPDATE APRIL 2001
NASA ADVENTURE
Bill Mumy, Marta Kristen & I visit NASA
Hello Everyone,
March turned out to be a fantastic month, highlighted by our trip to Florida for MegaCon and an unforgettable visit to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - John F. Kennedy Space Center, better known as NASA.
Shuttle3group.jpg (73562 bytes) It was a dream come true for me for I've wanted to go to NASA since I was 10 and the people there were incredible. They took us behind the scenes where we got to see the miraculous creations of the space program.
EndeavourInside2.jpg (304029 bytes) On Monday, March 5th, Marta Kristen, Bill Mumy, his son Seth, my son Jesse and I were given a grand tour of Kennedy Space Center. We saw the  space shuttle 'Endeavour' up close, as it was being prepared for its next mission in space and it was awesome.
Endeavourgroup.jpg (80990 bytes) ME, MARTA, BILL JESSE, CHARLIE AND SETH AT THE NOSE OF ENDEAVOUR.
We also saw the arrival of the space shuttle Atlantis, riding piggyback on a 747. We were given a crash course in a shuttle trainer plane by Charlie Justiz and chatted with the guys in the control area many of whom were 'Lost In Space' fans. We also gathered below the "Discovery' as it stood on its launch pad awaiting blast off in 3 days.
shuttlelaunch1.jpg (72309 bytes)   ShuttleLaunch.jpg (133807 bytes) The highlight, however, was seeing the actual  launch of 'Discovery' on March 8th.  That was something I'll never forget. It was a perfect launch, taking off on schedule at 6:45 am into a beautiful sunrise.
ShuttleLaunch2.jpg (154349 bytes) The energy of everyone in the stands watching enveloped you in all this positive energy. I'm so glad Jesse got to share this moment in history with me. After the launch we joined everyone at mission control in their celebratory 'beans and cornbread', although it was a bit tough on the stomach at 7 am for us...
ShuttleLaunch3.jpg (163873 bytes) I have so much admiration for men and women who are working on the space program.  Everyone was so excited about what they were accomplishing. I'm so grateful I actually got to experience this.
Many thanks to Astronaut Charlie Justiz, Louie Garcia and all the others that made it all happen. And a special tip of the hat to Kandy for coming to our rescue. She went beyond the call of duty...
For more information about what is going on in the space program check out these websites:

MagicKingdom.jpg (128913 bytes) SplashMtn2001.jpg (349429 bytes)We also got a chance to visit the 'Magic Kingdom' and 'Epcot' while we were in Florida. We had so much fun on the rides, it was a real treat. We decided to look relaxed and cool for our Splash Mountain picture...this is how that worked out.  Thanks to John Foley for the very special care he took of us.
Then it was back to reality in Los Angeles and back to school for the boys. I will never forget the fantastic time everyone at NASA showed us. It was also nice meeting you all at the con in Orlando, hope you will come by and visit while we're in Cleveland, Ohio this month.
Take care of you and yours,

UPDATE JUNE 2001
Bill Mumy, me and sister Veronica visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio
Hello,
I can't believe it's summer already. Where has this first half of the year gone?
It was in April that Bill, Veronica and I made our way to Cleveland, Ohio for the Ohio-Con. It was great meeting all of you that came by. We were glad to have found the time to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see "Lennon: His Life and Works" and tool around the city a bit.
I don't have much to report on the work front...but my house is getting nice and clean. I'm in a real summer cleanout mode. My kids are out of school now and Becca has moved home till she starts school again as a junior in college. She's gotten herself a great job and is going to take a few summer classes.  Jesse just can't contain his excitement over getting his drivers license really soon. I remember my sixteenth birthday, it was such an exciting passage. Hopefully our family vacation plans will fall into place and we'll get to recharge before school starts up again.
All in all, I'm just hoping to enjoy this summer with family and friends. Do some more writing, photography and organize my life.
Happy Fathers Day to Dad's everywhere.
Don't forget to check out Bill Mumy's new CD "After Dreams Come True" now available on his website in the Mumy Mall www.billmumy.com.
I've added an awesome link below that makes you realize, the world is really a small world after all...
Be good to yourselves this summer

EARTH AT NIGHT
****************Check the link below...This is really a sight to behold! Enjoy it!
The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space station.
You can scroll East-West and North-South (left and right and up and down). Canada's population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border (because this is where the best football and baseball is played). Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent". After the Nile the lights don't come on again till Joberg. Look at the Australian Outback and the Trans-Siberian Rail Route.
Moving east, the most striking is the difference between North and South Korea. What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing built Space Station.

UPDATE AUGUST 2001
Greetings,
I have just returned from the dedication of Guy Williams star on Hollywood Blvd, in Hollywood.  I was joined by the "Lost In Space" gang Bill Mumy, Jonathan Harris, Marta Kristen, Bob May and Dick Tufeld to witness the unveiling of his star.
Guy's wife, Jan, his son Steve and daughter Toni were on hand and lots of Guy's friends and fans, many of which wore 'Zorro' hats in his honor. I remember Guy as a sweet and gentle man who was always kind and wonderful to me. It was bittersweet, for we all miss having him around us when we get together.

BILL, ME, STEVE (GUY'S SON) AND MARTA AT THE DEDICATION
So next time you find yourself on Hollywood Blvd. check out Guy's Star, 2 blocks west of the Roosevelt Hotel on the south side of the street.
I'd also like to tell you about the beginning of the ACFC. My friend Cindy Lillibridge (President) will be starting a Fan Club for me.  I'm really excited about it. There will be a newsletter called the 'The Cartwright Muse' that members will receive and I'll be contributing to it. It will be filled with articles, pictures and lots more...Click on 'The Cartwright Muse' to find out more.

ON THE LAKE
Earlier in July a desired summer vacation for my family came together and we were all able to fly to Canada and stay with our friends Heather and Bob Urich at their beautiful home there. They have been telling us for years it's a place to kick back and relax, and they were right.

Bob on the Seadoo with their 3 year old daughter and Heather and I at the fresh vegetable stand getting that evenings dinner.  We had plenty of bar-b-ques, lake time, beach time, reading and talking time, and time to be by ourselves to contemplate life. I found time to go on a photo safari to photograph some of the beautiful landscapes and barns in this part of Canada. You can see some of those photos by clicking HERE.
On the way home we stopped off at Niagara Falls and took in that phenomena. My favorite part was visiting the Butterfly Museum there. Two thousand live butterflies float around you as you walk through the grotto-like aviary. You have to be quick with the camera...they move fast.
A Butterfly2.jpg (41066 bytes) It's amazing. A Butterfly.jpg (87424 bytes)
As is seeing Niagara Falls from a helicopter.
On our helicopter ride over Niagara Falls we all agreed  it's a wonder to see the falls from above as well as ground level. We also had experienced the falls up close and personal on the 'Maiden of the Mist' which goes so near the falls you get drenched.

YOU CAN SEE THE 'MAIDEN OF THE MIST' IN THIS PICTURE I TOOK FROM THE HELICOPTER

And now we are back California...it's always good to be home...but making the time to relax, kicking back with stimulating, thought provoking conversations, and being with my family and friends was the best part of the vacation. That's what is really important while we are on this planet.
  Till next time keep dreaming...

DECEMBER UPDATE

I have connected my holiday wishes to you on this November Update page... there is no question this season will be different for us all. We must keep the thoughts of the troops that are fighting for our freedom and their families who wait, in our thoughts.  We must send our prayers to those that will not be celebrating with their loved ones and truly be grateful if we are surrounded by family and friends.
I have always found the holidays to be a joyous time...something I always looked forward to, welcoming the hustle and bustle of the season... Christmas Carols and Santa, the smell of hot cider and the joy of music... but this year their is a touch of sadness with each familiar thing, and I am trying to live in this moment now that holds so many promises... I am counting each of my blessings with care and in my heart I am wishing for the strength to face a new year filled with peace for you and me.

NOVEMBER UPDATE
I broke my leg in 1994.  It was firemen who came to my rescue.  My children stood frozen at my side not knowing what to do.  My doctor friend fashioned a make shift splint for my leg, my girlfriend held my head while we waited endlessly for an ambulance to show up.  It never did.  It was firemen who came to my side... and the last thing I remember were the firemen's faces as they carried me to the car that would take me to the hospital before I passed out.
I've always had a soft spot for firemen, feeling they were very under appreciated for the variety of jobs they are called to do.  When I stood in front of the Company 10 Fire station in New York City last month...I was overwhelmed with sadness.
I had traveled into New York City with my sister Veronica after the Chiller Convention in New Jersey.  We visited friends and went to the exhibition of photographs at 116 Prince Street called "Here is New York".  It's well worth a visit to  their website... or better yet, if you're in the city... go take a look. A picture speaks a thousand words.  It brings the events of September 11th into perspective.
Ground Zero was a fog of surrealism.  It was dusty and quiet as we filed by the hundreds of candles, flowers, notes and pictures.  I watched the caterpillars struggle with the momentous task, I looked into stunned faces as they passed by me.
As I sat in the plane heading for home, I couldn't wait to hug my family and tell them how much I loved them. With the holidays approaching, I think I'll take a little more time to treasure the people in my life and make sure I tell them.  My heart goes out to the thousands of people who suffered from the events on September 11th.

What is sacred?
Of what is the spirit made?
What is worth living for?
What is worth dying for?"
