2002 UPDATES
February - April - July -  December

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2002
Greetings to you all in this brand New Year.
It's hard to believe the holidays are over and off we go again heading into 2002 with hope and promise.
I had so many laughs with my parents at Christmastime (left) Becca and her boyfriend Bryan and (right) Jesse and cousin Devon.
I have just found the time to add a new Scrapbook Part 6.  It has more recent photographs of me with the 'Lost In Space' clan, 'Sound of Music' buds and this and that. I also reworked Scrapbook Part 5 with some shots I came across, so check that out if the spirit moves you.
My time has been occupied with my photography lately.  My friend L.Ellen and I have created a line of photo albums we call 'Anam Cara' (which means soul-friend) and they have my hand-tinted photographs on the cover.
It's allowing me the freedom to shoot all the time, and be able to share some of my photographs with people. I have been painting every chance I get, and it always puts me in a good mood. They say if you follow the things in later life that you loved as a child you are following your passion. That's what I'm pursuing this year. My passions!
'Entertainment Tonight' came to my house for an interview in January. They asked me about my memories of 'Lost In Space' and my photography. Only a little of what we talked about aired, but they sure had a lot of questions. Perhaps you saw the show, it aired after the football post-game show. They also talked to Bill Mumy and everything we talked about is probably somewhere in the ET vault perhaps for later use.
Cindy Lillibridge my fan club president and I are working on our Spring issue of "The Cartwright Muse." Thanks to the miracle of e-mail I'm able to take an active part in the newsletter that is sent out 4 times a year, and it's a lot of fun. For more information about that go to this link ACFC
I also had a surprise visit from my spontaneous and crazy cousin Nonie, who lives in England.  She decided, spur of the moment, to come and visit me for the weekend. I hadn't seen her in four years and the weekend was full of laughs and getting caught up. We went for long walks and had a fun visit with my bud Heather Urich. She had never met Nonie before but it seemed like we'd all been together for years. Nonie has the uncanny ability to be comfortable under any situation... something I truly admire.

There are also other things on the table occupying my time...I promise to break the news here first, on my website. I hope you'll find it all as exciting as I do. So I better get back to work.
Keep the faith,

UPDATE APRIL 2002

    April 21, 2002
This has been the longest week... a nonstop emotional ride through the portals of a person’s life who was not ready to leave, and not ready to stop fighting, to the caverns of grief that a family must face and whose hearts have been torn by the disbelief...
After the memorial for Robert Urich, everyone went to Heather's home and lingered in the rooms and on the balconies exchanging stories. There were some laughs, and some tears and a lot of staring at the green golf course, which spread like a tablecloth in front of them.  How many times had Bob driven the course in his golf cart? Isn’t it odd that Bob's favorite flower, lilacs, only bloom in April and he would pick this month to pass? How many calla lily bulbs had he planted here in front of his library door?  My eyes rested on that empty chair on his library porch.
How many days were as beautiful as this one.  With the cerulean blue sky kissing the phthalo green grass... there would be no mixing colors if this day were to be painted, the colors would be right out of the tube.
Some of the bouquets were bigger than the front door, those only seem appropriate, for when Bob was in that house, he was bigger then life.
I hugged and spoke to people, some of them I only see occasionally. Familiar faces passed mine in the hallways, our eyes meeting in compassion and sadness. If I sat down right now I might never get up... if I cried right now I was afraid I would never stop... Heather stood in the entrance of her home for three hours greeting friends, and I knew she felt the same way. I wandered from room to room while the fragrance of lilacs lingered in the air...
The day was a dialogue of entrances and exits… food was there and then it was gone, wine glasses filled again and again, and the cerulean sky that turned midnight blue, gave birth to a million stars that had stayed dormant during the daytime but now glimmered overhead brighter than usual.  I felt closer to the earth, further from the craziness, and the world moved at a gentler pace… You could really see the stars out here too…

...and I remember nine months ago in Canada.  We sat around the fire pit after a gourmet meal that Bob had cooked from the the fresh vegetables Heather and I
had gathered at the market stands earlier that day.Bob sat in his adirondack chair, spread out his legs and leaned back to look at the stars.  He was tall and strong and handsome, and we all followed his lead, stretching out our legs and looking up at the blanket of stars overhead.  This was a different pocket of the world up here. Bob was so proud of this corner of the world that was his and he loved to share it.
The fire popped and crackled with the man-size fire he had built. Heather had brought out graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate and we had all put in our two cents on how smores were to be cooked. How to melt the chocolate and maintain the integrity of the cookie, regretfully there was not a Girl Scout among us. Bob had delighted in the banter, told us where to place them on the stones to achieve the right blend of flavors, and I remember the firelight dancing on his smiling face. This was the simplest time, the happiest of times, with both our families around us.
Bob had just been contracted to write his autobiography, and he struggled with how he would put it into words, this extraordinary life he had lived.  He had also been reminded that his struggle with Sarcoma was not over and he would leave in a few days to begin a new treatment. There was hope...
It was decided that life should be kept as normal as possible the day after the memorial, so I drove out to Heather’s again for her daughter’s birthday party. That morning the birthday girl had asked her mother "if they could glue Daddy back together so he could come to her party."  The little four year old was excited about the princess dress she had received, even putting on the crown and the diamond shoes, she didn’t care much for the visit from Cinderella though.  I’m sure she was wishing someone else would visit her.  All the presents in the world would not replace the fact that someone was missing.
Sadness sweeps over me like a wave on the shore. Bob has moved on now, to a peaceful place where he won’t hurt anymore.  Only those left behind will hurt now.  But as someone close to me said, “I’d rather live 55 years to the fullest, then 80 empty years.” In that there is comfort. Robert Urich, only 55 years old, really did live an extraordinary life. I sure will miss him.

UPDATE JULY 2002
Shooting pictures by the Rogue river
So far this has been a very busy summer filled with travel and friends.
On June 20th, my "Sound of Music" sibs, Heather Menzies, Debbie Turner, Kym Karath and myself made our way to the Richard Rodgers Centennial Celebration.  It was a fabulous show hosted by Julie Andrews. They played Richard Rodgers music, had live performances, and showed clips from the movies he’d scored.  It was great to see some of the old movies up on the big screen.  It truly was a celebration of great music.

Over the July 4th weekend, my family of four took a whirlwind vacation up to Ashland, Oregon where we visited three of my oldest and dearest friends and their families. They all moved up North over the last 15 years, and though we stay in touch by e-mail and phone, it had been awhile since I had gotten to visit them in person.  To see them was wonderful.  We laughed, ate, talked, and enjoyed the fireworks and parade through the center of town.  We spent time by the river where I did one of my favorite things, shoot photographs. Ashland, the home of the Shakespeare Festival, is a center for Arts and activity.  I can see why my friends have moved there as it is nested in a beautiful location by the Rogue River.
A Bunch of Good Friends
Barry and Debbie (front row left) are the owners of 'Encore Ceramics'.  They make terrific tile with the most outstanding glazes.  Dorothy and Dennis (front row right) Dennis just got his first book published "The Miracles of Santa Fico" Warner Books, to be released in January. Dorothy was involved every step of the way.  We were thrilled for them. Don and Niki (top left) build and design the most fantastic homes in Ashland. That's me and Steve on the right.
Larking around with the Band of Mothers
On the return trip home we drove through the town of Auburn, California so that Becca could visit her boyfriend Bryan. Auburn is a quaint old mining town filled with antique stores, the ‘Shanghai Bar’, and ‘Awful Annie’s’ restaurant.  This restaurant, nestled in the old part of town, is really deliciousThe owner, Jai Baker (Bryan's Mom), serves up the best of comfort food, and we’ve been wanting to visit there for quite awhile.  It was well worth it.  If you ever find yourself around Sacramento, California, it’s worth the trip for some really good food. I'll be including some of Jai's famous recipes in upcoming issues of my newsletter 'The Cartwright Muse'. The time flew by, but it refreshed my soul.

I’ve also been busy painting my black and white photographs for my first Art show 'Reflections' at Descanso Gardens in California the month of August.  Even though I have been taking photographs since I was 16, the process of putting a show together and displaying my photographs is a bit overwhelming.  First, I hand picked over 40 photographs I wanted displayed in my show.  Next, I made high-quality prints of the photographs I have chosen.  When my prints were ready, I indulged myself in many hours of hand painting each photograph to perfection.  When I finished the painting, I signed and numbered each print.  Then, I mounted, matted, and framed each photograph individually.  It’s all very exciting but exhausting. I would like to thank Mardgie and Vince for their never-ending help and generosity.  They really make my life a lot easier.
There is also a trip planned to celebrate my daughters 21st birthday.  I still can’t believe it’s been 21 years since this bouncing baby girl entered my world and changed it forever.  She still adds magic to my life.
Happy Birthday Becca!
FROM THIS TO THIS IN 21 YEARS!
Till next time, stay safe and cool and enjoy your summer.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2002
Hello... so much has been happening since I last wrote an update. I've been very busy with many various projects.
The beginning of November I had a fabulous trip to Salzburg, Austria with Heather Menzies Urich, (who played 'Louisa',) where I re-visited many of 'The Sound of Music' locations for the Travel Channel, to air in April.  What a blast we had.  It was such fun being with my buddy Heather and visiting this beautiful city again together.
So many memories...
(Left to Right) Reading about "The Sound of Music" tour of Salzburg. Recognize the Pavilion? Heather and I revisit Maribell Gardens, the yellow wall at Hellbrum Palace, one of our childhood favorite places, and dinner with our Salzburg friends.
I just finished filming an interview for an NBC program called "Child Stars Then and Now" where they talk with children that were on popular shows and catch up with what they are doing now. You'll see Bill Mumy on it too talking about his music.  Scheduled to air in February 2003.

Village Artisans Art exhibit in Montrose, California.  My work will be there till January 1st 2003. Thanks to all who came by to see my work and visit with me at my opening.

Three of my friends I've known since High School. Carol, Arlene and Maureen, came to my show.

The month of November also had it's sad moments when my good friend Jonathan Harris passed away.  It's hard to believe that a character as full of life and spirit as he possessed isn't with us anymore. His storytelling and wonderful voice will create a void in my life...and I will miss hearing him call me 'Angelinio'. He was always so kind to me and my family and you always knew you would laugh when you were with him. I'm grateful to have worked with him and I treasured our friendship over the years.

You probably won't get another update from me this year, but look for more news on this website in 2003 and in the 'Cartwright Muse' upcoming issues there will be more adventures and pictures.  Click here for more information about the 'Muse'.

Here's wishing you all a peaceful and joyful Holiday season.
