FACETS OF THE DIAMOND: 75 YEARS OF BEST PICTURE WINNERS - ACADEMY OF
MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES
My
Von Trapp Family reunite with Director Robert Wise to honor "The Sound of
Music" at the Academy. It
was a truly awesome experience to see the movie again on the big screen in
a refurbished, pristine print. I have seen this movie hundreds of times,
but once again it managed to sweep me away. It was great to see Bob
Wise again too.

Salzburg, Austria - November 2002
CLICK HERE FOR A TRAVEL SCRAPBOOK OF OUR TRIP
Heather and I are asked by
the Travel Channel to go back to Salzburg, Austria for their new show
"Movie Lovers Road Trip" airing April 3rd, 2003 on the Travel
Channel. We were asked to revisit the locations where the Sound of
Music was shot. We were more than happy to take a trip back to one
of our favorite places, and to be able to go together was so much fun.
There were many places we hadn't been able to visit in 2000 when all seven
of us had returned. This time, we took advantage of every minute,
returning in person and in our minds to those memorable years. It was on
this trip I shot the photos for my ECHOES exhibit when I revisited many of
the locations where we had filmed.
I shot many pictures of Salzburg and the locations where we shot the Sound of Music and have them on my website.

On October 30th, 2000 the seven
Von Trapp Family cast members from the movie were invited to Salzburg, Austria
to shoot a
documentary for British television. We would revisit, remember and
experience the locations in which we filmed "The Sound of
Music" and share our memories with each other and the audience.
You can imagine how excited we were, I hadn't revisited
Austria for 35 years, and I had dreamed of going back to the places where
we shot the movie. I wasn't prepared for the emotional feelings of being
there with my 'family' from the movie, and remembering the incredible
experience all over again. It was like being transported back in
time.
I have just
returned from two incredible weeks in Salzburg, Austria. After 35 years a
dream came true. Yorkshire Television, with the vision of Judith Holder
and her mighty talented crew, finally collected all seven of us 'Von Trapp Kids'
from the movie "The Sound of Music" for a journey down memory
lane. We were gathered together from different parts of the the planet to
fly to Austria to shoot a documentary remembering and revisiting the locations
where we shot the movie.
We revisited the
places that we shot 'Do Re Mi' (which was shot all over Salzburg), we attended a
party in our honor at the Residence Palace with the Mayor and the Governor of
Salzburg, and we went on the 'Sound of Music' tour. We also revisited the
incredible location where we had the picnic and 'started from the very
beginning' of Do Re Mi. It was as untouched and beautiful as
ever. These were just a few
of my favorite things we did. We relived moments 35 years ago that brought
us to tears and laughter. And the seven of us did it together for the first time
ever being filmed by a terrific crew.
After we finished the
documentary Heather, Debbie and I drove along the Danube River for 3 days
through the wine country on our way to Vienna and experienced some of the
most gorgeous landscape I've ever seen. Austria is a gorgeous
country. And it was Louisa, Brigitta and Marta hitting the road. What
a blast we had, I'm so glad we had the time to do that. |
We all met at
O'Hare airport in Chicago, Illinois. Nicky had flown in from Sydney,
Australia the day before and flew with Charmy, Heather and I from
Los Angeles. Debbie came from Minnesota, Kym from New York, Duane from
Seattle, Washington. |
|
The first shot we did for
the documentary took us to Maribell Gardens where we shot many of the scenes
from Do Re Mi. When they put the playback on, and we stood on that fountain
like we had 35 years before, tons of emotions flooded back to us all.
|
|
| This was taken at the Palace where the Governor of Austria and the Mayor
had a luncheon in our honor. The Palace is incredibly beautiful and
the room reminded me of the party scene in the movie with the music, fine
food and all. |
 |
| Here we stand behind a photo from the movie as
we are today, 35 years later. |
 |
One
of the most poignant moments for me was returning to the top of
that mountain where we learned how to 'start at the very
beginning' and sing a song called 'Do Re Mi'. I remember
it as a child with the view of the storybook castle that
was often floating on a cloud that hung at the bottom of the
mountain. How the mountain range rose to an incredible height
and the hillsides were dotted with quaint Austrian villages.
It is a magical place that I never thought I would ever see
again. I thought perhaps it would seem smaller then it had
as a child, but it was just the same...locked in time and just
as magnificent as it was 35 years ago.
This whole
experience was one I am so grateful to have had. As an adult I
could soak in the beauty of Austria completely, bond with my
movie family even more, have an abundance of laughs and memories
and appreciate completely the adventure I was blessed with so
many years before. The documentary aired in Great Britain. |

Sydney, Australia -
November 1999
In November of 1999 Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich Von Trapp) and I were invited to speak about "The
Sound of Music" and the effect the movie had on the studio at
the opening of the new 20th Century Fox Studios in Sydney,
Australia. We had such a terrific time. Nicholas
makes his home in Sydney but for me it was my first time
visiting there.

Nicky and I introduced Shirley Jones that evening, who sang songs from
"Carousel" with Hugh Jackman.
I went and saw the play "The Sound of Music" at the Lyric
Theatre. It was a great production. Here I am with some of the
cast members from the Australian Production.
